On Our Radar: November 2021

Welcome back to On Our Radar, Beatportal’s monthly roundup of the DJs and producers we can’t get enough of.

Check out the On Our Radar Beatport Chart to find tracks from the artists below, along with additional tunes that have caught our attention this month.

JASPER TYGNER

The breadth, depth and sophistication of Jasper Tygner’s productions are partly thanks to his background in jazz and classical music, although he’s now extended his musical repertoire to include the entire electronic music sphere. His lo-fi, atmospheric guest mixes have appeared on Rob da Bank’s Worldwide FM show and Selector Radio, and his 2020 chill-out R&B track “Something Else” featuring Ruby Wood and his minimal electronica track “FTLOG” got plays outs on Radio 1 and 1Xtra. But the Londoner’s really stretched his legs with his new Eyes Open EP, out on Silver Bear Recordings, which also received extensive plays across the BBC, including Jaguar’s BBC Introducing on Radio 1 Dance, and 1Xtra’s Cosmic Wind Down with Jamz Supernova. It’s all hazy, post-rave euphoria – a melting pot of R&B, breaks, garage, electronica and everything else in between – and firmly places the artist in line with Vegyn, Ross From Friends and Tourist.

OBLVYN

OBLVYN has almost single-handedly put Edmonton, Canada on the electronic music map. The artist’s latest manifestation comes in the form of an eight-track EP on Monstercat called Dream Theory, which is more of an audiovisual experience than an album. Each track hits that euphoric electronic sweet spot; the artist describes the album as “an introspective journey through the subconscious mind, its strange quirks and curious phenomena.” It’s virtually impossible not to feel uplifted by “Fly,” an infectious, deep-bass production with a soaring digitised guitar solo that makes as much sense in a video game as it does on an Elrow dance floor. OBLVYN made her debut live performance at Monstercat’s flagship festival Compound last month, and there’s no doubt Dream Theory has set her up for a massive 2022.

MOKTAR

Moktar released his debut single “Silk” earlier this month on Mall Grab’s Steel Citv Dance Discs and it’s a straight-up gun-finger scorcher. Born and raised in Australia, Moktar cites his Egyptian roots and his experiences overcoming racism as inspiration for his productions, which act as a middle finger to the society that made him feel ashamed of his heritage. “Silk” is a track from his debut five-track self-titled EP, which Moktar has used as an opportunity to celebrate his heritage with Arabic percussion and instrumentals, paired with UK-infused breaks and pummelling electro. The album isn’t just a fuck-you to racism, but a portrait of an artist who’s at peace with himself and proud to express every facet of his glorious identity.

KA BOUKIE

Jamaica-born Ka Boukie’s music is inspired by the time he spends between Kingston, London and Philadelphia. His exploration of the spectrum of sound began when he first heard Jazzu and Leon Somov perform their electronic and minimal productions at the MTV European Music Awards. Since then Boukie’s become good friends with the duo, with Leon inviting him to feature on his debut solo album No Batteries No Toys. This was the platform Boukie needed to kickstart his production career and his latest release “Nightcrawler” on his own label Boukie World is an eery spookfest that demonstrates his ability to create hypnotic, catchy electronica. As well as his own tunes, Ka Boukie’s been featured on a bunch of tracks from artists across the UK and EU including the Old Apparatus Collective, Domas Aleksa, Jonas Drema and more.

AROMA PITCH

Berlin-based producers, DJs, label heads and live trio Aroma Pitch‘s debut album Interlife on Public Possession is a surreal techno entity, inspired by the fantasy of a dance floor and dreams of an Ibiza sunset. Jesse Scherwitz, Julius Richter and Magnus von Welck are members of the Equations Collective and residents at Berlin’s OHM, Cologne’s left-field club space Klub Jaki and Stadtgarten Cologne’s Cologne Sessions. Aroma Pitch’s residencies have allowed the trio to explore their mesmerising, percussion-heavy sound and jazzy maneuvers. There’s no doubt Interlife, with it’s mixture of trance, minimal, euphoria and techno, will catapult these friends to the forefront of Germany’s club comeback and cement their reputation as one of the most skilled, unique and forward-thinking acts around.

DEFSET

Rising star DEFSET’s about to rise even faster with the release of his new EP Proximity on EMK. The album follows a string of critically acclaimed singles, namely “Deadlines,” “Shira 2” and “Bathtime,” all of which showcase the artist’s modular synthesiser mastery. Real name Leo Neelands, Proximity is full of fresh, left-field glitchy productions written entirely in lockdown and mixed and mastered by Tim Pennells (Floating Points, Nyx, Gazelle Twins, Tourist, Honne). DEFSET experiments with field recordings, modular synths, live drums and hardware analogue synths to create every sound from scratch, resulting in a luscious, visceral and energetic album unlike anything we’ve heard before.
