Chicago house music pioneer Roy Davis Jr. celebrates the arrival of his Men From The Nile reissue with a motley selection of dance floor burners for Beatport’s Playlist of the Week.
This DJ chart presents tracks that I choose to play, some of them are newly released and some of them are timeless older strong tracks. They are also house tunes that are created to set a good mood and influence people to dance and vibe to. A bit of Chicago and New York flavor and a sprinkle of Detroit amongst some Afro-Latin inspirations – making this a diverse dance selection to build a set around.
The chart includes the 1997 “Watch Them Come” re-issue of Men From The Nile on my label Undaground Therapy Muzik and new remixes by Soul Clap, Matt N Ricky, Green Velvet and more. At the time this song was made, being the young entrepreneur I was, I knew that “Watch Them Come” was and is timeless and I decided to put it out myself to protect its legacy. This move enabled me to re-release new remixes for you today. Remember to always believe in yourself despite what other people may say, keep pushing forward on your vision.
Men From The Nile’s Watch Them Come & Remixes (Reissue) is out now via Undaground Therapy Muzik. Buy it on Beatport.
Men From The Nile – Watch Them Come feat. Peven Everett, Roy Davis Jr, Jay Juniel (Green Velvet Remix) [Undaground Therapy Muzik]
Men from the Nile is one of my favorite alias groups that I put together with Jay Juniel. We decided to feature Peven Everett on vocals together with myself and Peven also performed on the MOOG. This is one of the first releases on Undaground Therapy Muzik which was long overdue for reissue. This is why I decided to get a fresh set of remixes for today’s audience. For this DJ chart I selected the remix by Green Velvet who is a longtime friend of mine out of Chicago who’s style ties into my current sound of today. This particular remix is very bumpy and chunky with a minimal driving house approach.
DJ Wady, MoonDark – Babalua Gruuv (Element’s Remix) [Safe Music]
This particular track works well for me because I am a lover of heavy percussions and abstract vocals. It makes me want to dance and chant at the same time.
K Alexi Shelby – Groove With Us (Original Mix) [Play it Say it]
I choose this groove for the reason that it is a reminiscent of an old school disco jam that I love. Ron Hardy used to play it from the Musicbox in Chicago back in the day. Plus I respect when real house legends chop of a groove like K Alexi did on this one.
Oscar P – All I Do Is Think (Main Mix) [Open Bar Music]
To anyone who knows anything about me it is not necessary to say that I am a huge Steve Wonder fan. So, when Oscar P, one of my favorite house producers, decided to chop up this classic it really fed my soul and still does every time I play it.
Bob Sinclar, Salome De Bahia – Outro Lugar (Bob Sinclar Extended Mix) [Yellow Productions]
For me, this beautiful Brazilian floor stumper just rings the sound of angels celebrating on a dance floor. The repetitive cord playing bounces along into a playful journey.
Joeski – Afro Latinism (Original Mix) [Maya Records]
I choose this track because of its Afro Latin like feel with spoken words touching on all four corners of this earth creating a vibe of togetherness breathing rhytm and soul. The energy of the spoken word speaks power into the air.
Oscar P, Cris Herrera, DJMIKETBROWN – Lets Get It (Norty Cotto Classic Mix) [Good Stuff Recordings]
Let’s get it speaks about getting everything in your life together with a nice Philadelphia soul percussion with a deep muted trumpet being played over a silky disco funk-like bassline.
The SyntheTigers – So Good (Mike Delgado Remix) [Moulton Music]
This deep sound of T.S.O.P. just works as a DJ friendly let our hair out type of groove with vocal samples of Loleatta Holloway singing so good with passion and a fazed Rhodes keyboard bringing everything together for a midnight jam.
Cerrone, Purple Disco Machine – Summer Lovin’ (Original Mix) [Malligator Productions / Because Music]
Cerrone springs out with a cool synth line and organic strings with a very serious live funky bassline and a touch of freshness on the entire jam. This tune speaks genius and timeless.
Bruno Furlan – Bongoloco (Original Mix) [Hot Creations]
Bongoloco speaks volumes on any tech house floor with heavy bongos with a ’90s-like shuffle taking you into a percussion drop to die for. The simplistic bassline carries this track through for me.
