Owning Your Company’s History and Navigating Change

Date/Time: Thursday, October 20, 2022 @ 16:00-16:30

What are the lessons to be learned from the need to deal with present-day social discussions that have arisen from behaviour that took place in the distant past? What is the internal impact of the social backlash and how do you deal with that constructively and positively while protecting current employees and partners? What changes have been implemented at Beatport since the alleged incidents and what is the ideal outcome of owning your company history and leaning into the very real challenges our entire community faces?

Following a well-documented series of allegations, AFEM recently stated its intention to work with Beatport towards ensuring an equitable, safe and positive working culture for all, while also outlining tangible, measurable structures for change, with the hope that this would set a new set of standards for the global DJ industry. A conversation between Silvia Montello (CEO, AFEM) and Robb McDaniels (CEO, Beatport).

Creative Sampling in Electronic Music

Date/Time: Friday, October 21, 2022 @ 11:00 – 11:45
Location: Brakke Grond (Darkroom)

Sampling has become an irreplaceable aspect of modern music production, with a rich history that now spans many decades. The face of creative sampling is constantly being shaped and innovated by artists, sample providers and laws, with the current iteration providing a level playing field where creators can be paid fairly for their work and producers can be connected to the sounds of their favourite artists.

We invite Loopcloud sample pack alumni Ashibah, Dam Swindle and Rodriguez Jr. to explore the evolution of sampling, production workflows, sound design and more, with the intention to highlight the uses and creation of sample packs today. This will prove to be an insightful meeting of minds, underlining a few of the many different approaches and attitudes towards the regularly contemplated topic of sample packs in electronic music.
