We look back at 30 years of Andy Van and John Course’s seminal Australian imprint, Vicious — Beatport’s Hype Label of the Month.
Founded in 1992, Melbourne-based label Vicious and its collection of in-house imprints have been putting their stamp on the global dance music scene for decades. Founded by Andy Van (Madison Avenue / Super Disco Club) and John Course, Vicious got its start releasing early electronic records from the likes of Carl Cox, Pendulum, and Ground Level. Always with its finger on the pulse of the scene, this restless music label has continuously adapted and evolved, celebrating its underground catalouge and eventually grooming mainstage artists like Dirty South, Peking Duk, Potbelleez, and the late global superstar, Avicii, whose first ten records appeared on Vicious — including his first Beatport #1, “My Feelings For You.” With over 800 releases under its belt, some of its other dance floor anthems include Sgt. Slick’s “Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie,” Joshwa’s remix of Madison Avenue’s “Don’t Call Me Baby,” Elektrik Disko’s “Tell Me Why,” and more.
Now celebrating its 30-year anniversary, we caught up with label founders John Course and Andy Van to learn more about his label’s sound, its history, musical outlook, plans for the future, and some of its most essential tracks. Check out the video below!
