We catch up with Repopulate Mars boss Lee Foss and fast-rising UK DJ-producer Joshwa whose joint tech house rework of the Black Eyed Peas hit “My Humps” just hit Beatport’s overall top spot.
Hello Joshwa, hello Lee — congratulations on having your first Beatport number one together! Did you already have a chance to celebrate the news?
Hey, thanks guys — it’s an amazing feeling to get a Beatport number one! Lee and I are catching up this weekend in London, so we intend to celebrate properly then! We’re buzzing with how the release has panned out so far and super grateful to everyone who has bought a copy to get it to that top spot!!
When did you first realise that this might become a very popular track?
The reactions and responses from people after Lee and John played it out for the first time was crazy! We had so many people asking about the ID on socials on a daily basis. An Instagram reel also went wild and gained millions of views which was a big indicator of people’s love for it!! You know you’re on to something when you’re hitting views like that, and the comments are full of people asking for the song.
There’s been quite some popularity recently in tech house tracks that are sampling or replaying dance classics, usually with recognisable lyric hooks. Why do you think that is?
People love to hear recognisable lyrics/vocals of songs that they grew up with when out and about — something you already know all the words to whilst being able just to enjoy the newfound house grooves. That nostalgia creates so much energy on the dancefloor, when you combine it with a dark, techy beat like the one on “My Humps” and a much bigger moment. Sampling has always been a core part of dance music and will continue to be because of this.
How did you work together on the track, and do you have plans for producing more tracks together?
We got talking more regularly off the back of Josh’s first release with Repopulate Mars, “Party’s Jumpin,” and started sharing more music with each other. One thing led to another, and the end result was “My Humps!” We’ve got lots more in the pipeline, which we look forward to sharing with you.
