Playlist of the Week: Roger Sanchez

Dominican-American house music stalwart Roger Sanchez celebrates the 20-year-anniversary of his seminal dance floor hit “Another Chance” with Beatport’s Playlist of the Week.

This year marks 20 years since the release of my single “Another Chance,” and I have put together a list of tracks that are important to me and continue to create a story on the dance floor whenever I play them. My goal is to connect with my audience emotionally and energetically, and these tracks never fail to do so. They are moments in time embodied in sound that are captured repeatedly by the movement of the dancers before me during each set I play, and I always look forward to the next time I can reconnect.

Roger Sanchez – Another Chance [Ministry Of Sound]

This was the last track I created for my first artist album, First Contact, and the bittersweet vocals of Toto’s “I Won’t Hold You Back” ballad inspired me to create “Another Chance.” It still resonates with emotion to this day.

Daft Punk – Too Long [Daft Life]

I was on tour with Daft Punk on their Homework tour when they first exploded and was impressed by their love and knowledge of the New York House music scene. Though “One More Time” was their crossover hit with Romanthony, “Too Long” still remains one of my fave underrated tracks they made with him.

Roger Sanchez – My Roots (Technasia Remix) [Stealth]

Technasia’s remix took my track to another darker and energetic level — it’s all about the bass on this one!

DJ Rolando – Knights Of The Jaguar

This is one of those tracks that crossed the barriers from techno to house and everything in between, and it never fails to transport my mind to a realm where mystical beats roam the dance floor alongside us humans. A truly beautiful piece of music.

Octave One – Black Water (feat. Ann Saunderson) [Defected]

I love emotional House music, and “Black Water” is an embodiment of soul and emotion. The stings and bassline coupled with the vocals create a powerful dance floor moment with this one.

Mr. G – Lights [Rekids]

Mr. G IS a G! The energy of this disco-tech track cannot be understated- peak time fire beats!

The S-Men – Who We Are [Defected]

Another slice of peak hour disco vibes! This was the result of a sun-drenched summer in Ibiza, reconnecting with my S-brothers, DJ Sneak and Junior Sanchez

Roger Sanchez, Oba Frank Lords – Alma Roja (DJ Chus Remix) [Stealth Records]

Latin drums are at the core of my sound, and Oba Frank Lords embodies the sound of the Latin drum! His chants connect with the spiritual roots of the sound, and DJ Chus’s remix added the Iberican feel to it, making it my go-to tribal track of the moment.

Michael Watford – Michael’s Prayer [Ibidan]

One of the most soulful vocalists I’ve ever worked with has to be Michael Watford. This song from his album was born from the ad-libs he did for a remix I created for another artist where I had brought him in as a background vocalist to produce the vocal arrangement. He MURDERED those ad-libs!

Afefe Iku0 – Mirror Dance [Yoruba Records]

Relentless and driving, this is one of my go-to Afro tribal tracks that always rocks.
