Peder Mannerfelt – Year of the Rats [Voam]
Peder Mannerfelt on Blawan and Pariah’s Voam? Yes, please. “Year of the Rats” is actually one of Peder’s more restrained tracks, but it doesn’t suffer because of this. Pinned down by an unrelenting and booming kick, the track weaves in and out of menacing synths, pitched down percussion and vocal phrases. Great stuff.
Birds ov Paradise – Köpp [Manjumasi]
Birds ov Paradise channel their inner Voices From The Lake with this hypnotic gem. Perfect for a heads-down moment, this subtle banger will do the damage. The production on “Köpp” sounds absolutely phenomenal and adds to the cerebral nature of the track.
El Choop – Insane Sends [Echocord]
Judging by the name of the track, El Choop had quite a few complex send channels on this track and by the sounds of things, it worked. Fitting perfectly with the Echocord aesthetic, this is a lush dub techno that’s driving enough to work in a set. Quite cold in it’s temperament and mood, you’ll want to play this when things are getting a bit more serious.
Kareem El Morr – Supersonic [RFR Records]
Kareem El Morr’s effort for RFR sounds ugly as hell and I mean that as a compliment. The snarling synths, the non-stop bassline and the metallic percussion all lend themselves to a sound that will definitely have you pulling a stank face. Perfect for the moments when you want to up the intensity a little.
QphoriQ – Quasars Infrared [Corpus]
A dark stepper here from the hands of QphoriQ. Starting off by setting the scene with an excellent build up to bleepy synths and reverberated pads, our favourite moment is when everything cuts out and we’re left with the awesome, broken beat that has been setting time for the rest of the track.
T Kode – Escape From Heart [Hayes]
Finishing off this week’s selections is the relentless “Escape From Heart” by T Kode. The tracks sounds like a rave in an alien laboratory with pummeling kick drums and squishy, otherworldly synths in the stereo field. This is definitely one for the early hours of the morning, 100 percent rave-basement aesthetic.
