Playlist of the Week: Sam Divine

UK DJ/producer, label owner, and radio host Sam Divine shares ten standout tracks that have played a part in her musical journey from the very beginning right through to today.

It was so hard to narrow down 10 tracks, as I have so many that I love for so many different reasons. I have selected the tunes that resonate with me the most right now, giving you an insight into my musical influences, from soulful house to R&B with everything from essential warm-up tracks to those 3 a.m., dirty, sweaty warehouse vibes!

These are tracks that hold nostalgia and take me back to the moment I heard it for the first time; these are tracks that give me goosebumps as soon as I hear the intro and where all the vocals hit differently. Each of these tunes speaks to my soul, makes me want to move my feet, and makes me want to sing the lyrics at the top of my lungs!

The System – You’re In My System (Jerome Sydenham & Kerri Chandler’s Atmospheric Vocal Mix) [Ibadan Records]

Ever since its release in 2010, I have been in love with it! Anything Kerri Chandler puts his hand to it turns to gold! He’s an absolute wizard and this track is proof of that! An absolute classic and it’s still just as relevant now as it was 11 years ago.

Michael Watford – Michael’s Prayer Phase 1 (Complex Dance Music – Anniversary Edition Space Lab Yellow) [Ibadan Records]

Anyone who knows me knows I LOVE a gospel lyric! It’s hard to believe this is 20 years old. This could’ve been released yesterday! It still sounds fresh as ever! There are so many elements to this track. No matter how many times you play it, I will never get bored of it!

Jaques Le Noir – I’m Feeling Fine [DVINE Sounds]

This bouncy number from Jacques Le Noir is one of my favourite DVINE Sounds releases to come out of 2020. I can’t wait to get back to a club and play this to a dance floor full of ravers! It will go off!

Louie Vega & The Martinez Brothers with Marc E. Bassy – Let It Go (Vintage Culture Remix) [Defected]

When Louie Vega and The Martinez Brothers get together, you know there’s going to be fire in the booth! “Let It Go” has been doing bits for a minute now, with some dope remixes, but my favourite has to be the Vintage Culture Remix! It’s safe to say it was the track of 2020.

Quentin Harris feat. Margaret Grace – My Joy [Soul Heaven Records]

A firm favourite of mine and my girl gang! This one gives me all the feels, it’s always guaranteed to get dropped whenever we get together. That bassline though…takes me back to my Ibiza days!

John Summit & GUZ (NL) – Thin Line (Extended Dub) [D4 D4NCE]

Defected launched their sublabel, D4 D4NCE, with this nugget at the end of last year. It has featured heavily in my sets throughout lockdown and has to be crowned my lockdown anthem of 2020! I love all versions of “Thin Line” but the dub is most definitely my favourite.

Simkid – Young World [Guesthouse Music]

I loved Kanye’s original “No Mistakes” back in 2018, and I’m loving the house spin Simkid has put on it. Caroline Shaw’s vocal is stunning, reminds me of the late Whitney Houston. This needs to be in your locker!

Barbara Tucker – Beautiful People (Floorplan Remix) [Positiva]

I can’t get enough of this track from one of the most iconic voices in the biz, Barbara Tucker. Another soulful record that has been at the top of my playlist since its release in 2016, and it’s the father-daughter duo, Floorplan, AKA the legend that is Robert Hood, working their magic on the remix. Turn it up!

Riva Starr feat. Jocelyn Brown – Always [Truesoul]

Jocelyn Brown is the soulful QUEEN when it comes to vocals! Her collaboration with my homie Riva Starr has been a staple part of my sets since its release in 2018. It brings back so many amazing memories from my North America tour. 100% guaranteed feel-good track!

R.I.P Productions – Burning Up [Ice Cream Records]

It’s mad to think this was released in 1996! 25 years later and it’s still going strong! Plenty of remixes and vocal samples of this one, proving to be a classic in its own right. “Burning Up” needs to be turned up, preferably on the biggest sound system you can find!
