We look back at Seth Troxler’s educational and immensely groovy livestream takeover for Beatport’s The Residency during Black History Month, 2021.

For our first Beatport Residency of 2021 — a program that hands our Twitch channel over to some of the world’s best dance music artists for a month of hand-picked livestreams — Detroit native Seth Troxler put together a one-of-a-kind line-up to celebrate Black History Month. Filled with talks about the Black origins of house and techno, exclusive performances from some of Brooklyn, Detroit, and Chicago’s most legendary pioneers, and much more, each week was a lesson in dance music history that was wonderfully informative and dance floor friendly.

Each episode followed a similar theme, beginning with a roundtable discussion where Seth and guests will reflect on the history, influences, and important records that helped shape moments and movements in house and techno.

To kick things off, Seth Troxler invited world-famous intellectual Dr. Cornel West to discuss the origination of house and techno by African American creators. Joining the discussions and following them up with performances were legends like Ron Trent, Kevin Saunderson, and Tony Humphries. From there, guests such as Stacey Hotwaxx Hale, Paul Johnson, Al Ester, Channel Tres, DJ Holographic, and more proceeded to dive in with a set centered around each day’s theme.
