Maceo Plex calls for unity with a brooding but funk-fueled anthem.
His latest single for Ministry of Sound, “Cinemax” follows Maceo’s last single “Nu World,” the proceeds of which were donated to the American Civil Liberties Union’s campaign to fight voter suppression in the 2020 US election.
The track features one of dance music’s most iconic samples, taken from Alice Russell and The Quantic Soul Orchestra’s “Pushin’ On,” giving the vocal a modern and brooding twist.
But it’s more than a catchy hook. With the US election behind us, the sample also acts as a call to action. “We are leaving the past behind,” Maceo Plex said in a press release. “Time to unify, leave the racism and division behind us. The lyrics tell this story. The song itself is a deep chugger, always building with forwarding momentum.”
This is Maceo’s second outing on Ministry of Sound, following his 2019 single “When The Lights Are Out.”
“Cinemax” is available for pre-order now, and will be released on December 12, 2020.
